Deputy Director of the Sustainable Resources Directorate, European Commission’s Joint Research Centre
Greet Janssens-Maenhout is Deputy Director of the Sustainable Resources Directorate of the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre in Ispra. Since 2021 Greet leads the Forests and Bioeconomy unit, with a focus on forest science and biogenic carbon. In 2025 the soil and carbon farming team joined the unit, from 2026 onwards called the Land and Climate unit. Greet keeps strong links with the European Environment Agency, the European Space Agency and former international IPCC colleagues. She has a scientific background in greenhouse gas monitoring, having led for a decade the Emissions Database for Global Atmospheric Research and having cofounded the Earth observation monitoring and verification support of greenhouse gases. She holds a master's degree in engineering sciences and a Ph.D. in thermo-fluid dynamics from the University of Karlsruhe and she is a professor at the University of Ghent.
