Coordinating Inspector, Nature Conservation Domain, Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority
Meriam Wortel is the Coordinating Inspector for the Nature Conservation Domain at the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority. The Nature Conservation Domain focuses on wildlife crime and the prevention of biodiversity loss worldwide. It focuses on enforcing the EU timber regulation, the CITES regulation (endangered species of animals and plants), the Invasive alien species regulation, and the Nagoya protocol on protecting the use of natural resources. Meriam has over twelve years experience with enforcing the EU timber regulation. The NVWA is currently working on the implementation of the EU deforestation regulation and has inspectors in the field inspecting companies and private persons but it also has more policy orientated senior inspectors liaising with the Ministry, the European Commission, NGO’s, Scientists and branch organisations.
